Teach your kids the 10 Commandments. You can use this printable pack and let them color while you talk.
Used to, long before there was Sunday School and Children’s Church, parents taught their kids the Ten Commandments. I know that we had a plaque that had the Ten Commandments on them (yay for Home Interior!). But I never knew what “adultery” or “bear false witness” meant. I was taught to memorize the words, but no one ever taught me that adultery meant “don’t have sex with anyone you’re not married to and to keep a pure mind”. No one ever taught me that “bear false witness” meant “don’t lie”.
So my question is, as a Sunday School teacher when I teach the 10 Commandments, how am I supposed to explain what adultery is? The real meaning of adultery? You see, it’s more than just “be faithful to your spouse”. My kids have known about sex and the importance of remaining a virgin until they were married and being faithful after marriage since what seems like forever. It’s just always been a topic in our home. We take this matter very seriously, because it is part of God’s Word and it is also the cause of much hurt in our culture today.
If you don’t teach your kids about biblical sexuality, then I (and others in church leadership) can’t properly teach them the Word when they are students in our classes. And if you’re not teaching them and I’m not teaching them, then the world is teaching them.
IntoxicatedOnLife has a great study called “The Talk: 7 Lessons to Introduce Your Child to Biblical Sexuality“. This book was so popular, Amazon contacted the authors directly to ask if Amazon could convert it to Kindle for them for free. How amazing is that? I have done this study with my own 8 year old daughter, and we had a great time learning about our bodies. Is it a little weird talking about this kind of stuff? Yes! So I kept it light-hearted, and we just giggled our way through the crazy parts.
